2008 TanTerra Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon, San Jose, Uruguay $15

This is quite the up and coming region for wine lately, producing terrific deep flavored reds that are terrific values. This wine is grown sustainably with an emphasis on quality and flavor. The Tannat grape is one that is not seen often, used mostly as a blending grape in France, it has became almost the national grape of Uruguay. It displays characteristics of dark color and high alcohol, but the fruit flavors are soft and deep. When you pour your first glass of this wine aromas of earthy leather and black plums fill the glass and carry perfectly into the tasting experience. Upon hitting the mouth notes of white pepper, mocha, and oak are framed with bright red fruit sensations. All of these are wrapped together perfectly on the finish making this a terrific under $20 wine. Try this wine with short ribs or flank steak the unique flavors of the wine will draw out the deeper flavors of the meat making for a unique dinning experience.
